Day of Mourning

April 28 has been designated the Day of Mourning, a time when workers, families, employers, and others across Canada come together to remember those who were injured, disabled, or have lost their lives to work-related incidents or occupational diseases.

Every year, the ACSA and the eight Regional Safety Committees across Alberta co-host public ceremonies to honour the occasion, along with the WCB and other safety associations and committees.

SAIT is honoured to be the first post-secondary in Canada to have a scholarship established by a Day of Mourning committee. ALL SAIT students are eligible to apply for the $1,000 per year award as long as they are enrolled in their third semester, have financial need, demonstrated safety training and commitment in their chosen profession (for example training in WHMIS, CSTS or WSPS).

"Promoting awareness and an ever-improving safety culture are essential in preventing workplace injuries," says Kevin Barrett, Manager, Health, Safety and Environment. "The Day of Mourning reminds us to pause and reflect on the role each of us plays to ensure work is done in a safe manner. Each of us is accountable in taking the necessary steps to prevent workplace incidents."

This unique award helps to lend a voice to the fallen workers of Alberta and is a reminder to all of our students to think about the safety of their workplaces and teammates at all times.
