The SAIT community is celebrating the life of a friend and an integral part of the SAIT family. We were fortunate to have Clarence Hollingworth watch and participate in SAIT's growth and success for more than 100 years — as a child growing up across the street, as a student with us, and as a faculty member.
Clarence became well known to the SAIT community during the 2016 centennial celebrations after organizers uncovered his nearly 100-year-long relationship with the Institute. As a six-year-old child, he witnessed the laying of the cornerstone for the main building of the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (PITA), which is now SAIT’s Heritage Hall.
SAIT continued to play an important role in Clarence’s life many times over the decades. He enrolled as a student in 1933 and was hired as an instructor in the Electrical Department in 1952.
During his centennial birthday year in 2015, Clarence was recognized with an Honourary Bachelor of Science degree at SAIT’s spring convocation. In his acceptance speech, he told students SAIT always had a big place in his heart. His message – “May each of you enjoy your career as much as I did my 28 years teaching at SAIT.”
When Clarence turned 103, SAIT created the Clarence Hollingworth Scholarship; the scholarship will provide $1,000 to help a deserving pre-employment electrician student achieve an education at SAIT. The recipient will have to demonstrate financial need, academic achievement and provide an essay on why they chose SAIT for his/her education.
Clarence Hollingworth passed away on Jan. 1, 2023, and will be missed by all of the SAIT community.
